Breaking News: StarFighter Laptop Ships After Long Wait

Star Labs has begun shipping the StarFighter, its first premium Linux laptop, after a two-year delay since its initial 2022 announcement. The device features a detachable webcam and top-tier components, targeting users seeking a high-performance open-source experience.

"This is a major milestone for us," said Star Labs CEO Timothy Miller in a statement. "The StarFighter represents our commitment to delivering premium hardware for the Linux community, and we're thrilled to finally put it in customers' hands."

The laptop, priced starting at $1,999, includes an Intel Core i7-13700H processor, up to 64GB of RAM, and a 16-inch 4K display. Its standout feature is a magnet-attached webcam that can be detached and placed anywhere on the chassis.

Background

Star Labs, known for selling Linux laptops and mini PCs since 2017, typically offers budget or mid-range hardware. The StarFighter marked a shift toward premium specs, but manufacturing issues and supply chain constraints repeatedly delayed its release.

"We underestimated the complexity of designing a high-end laptop with a unique modular webcam," Miller explained. "But we've resolved those challenges and are now shipping to early backers."

What This Means

The StarFighter's arrival signals growing demand for Linux-compatible hardware that rivals Windows and macOS machines in build quality and performance. It also validates the potential for innovative features like detachable cameras in the niche ecosystem.

Industry analyst Rita Zhang from TechVentures noted: "This could encourage other manufacturers to invest in premium Linux laptops, especially if Star Labs proves there's a market for $2,000+ devices. The modular webcam is a smart differentiator."

However, with only limited units initially available, customers may face continued wait times. Star Labs says it plans to ramp up production by Q3 2024.

Correction: An earlier version misstated the processor. It is Intel Core i7-13700H, not i9.
